- What are AR and VR Virtual Reality doing? | LONGHAO
-
Where does Virtual Reality come from?
Immersive Experience is a form of experience that “immerses a person in a certain environment”, which can be seen in various fields nowadays. The reason for the prevalence of immersive experience is that, in addition to the changes in lifestyle and the improvement of related rights and interests, with the continuous improvement and optimization of digital-related products and technologies, AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual reality) have started to be widely used under this trend. With the continuous improvement and optimization of digital-related products and technologies, AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual reality) have gradually been widely used under this trend.
What is the relevance of VR to 3D?
AR and VR are based on a virtualized environment, consisting of 3D space, interaction and projection. However, it is not simple to create a completely virtual object or environment, which means that the relevant workers need to spend a lot of time and technical support in order to present the ideal effect in the final result, including the measurement of the object, the construction of the model, the correction and calibration of the model, and the testing of the effect, and other complicated procedures in the design stage, which will lengthen the entire development process of the product, and therefore can only delay the time to market. This means that it takes a lot of time and technical support to achieve the desired effect in the final result, including object measurement, model construction, model correction and calibration, effect testing, and other complicated procedures.
Through the above description, it is not difficult to see that the product from the development to market process, we must first go through a long period of preparation, so the development of AR and VR is also slow, until the addition of 3D scanning technology, effectively solve these problems. At this point, you may be wondering: what is the relationship between 3D scanning and AR/VR, and how does 3D scanning help 3D modeling? Perhaps we can start with the principle of 3D scanning.
How does 3D scanning help with 3D modeling?
3D scanner common technologies are laser / blue light / red light / white light, etc., regardless of which technology, are through the scanner to detect the Point Cloud to collect shape appearance and depth information, but also can use the relevant technology to further obtain the color information on the surface, and ultimately the data collected by the auxiliary tools to carry out three-dimensional reconstruction of the calculations, to complete the non-physical 3D digital model modeling, the models can be applied to any need to use the 3D model occasion, the relevant industries or workers a great deal of benefit. These models can be used in any situation that requires the use of 3D models, which is of great benefit to related industries or workers.
What can 3D scanning do for virtual reality development?
- Convert objects into visualization data through 3D scanning technology and save it.
- Quickly and accurately measure surfaces/holes/grooves and reconstruct digital 3D models of objects.
- The finished model can be imported into the application to be edited or used in any way.
- Lowering the technological threshold and accelerating the product development process

The 3D scanners in the market continue to be innovative. Can you not accurately select products? Longhao has 30 years of industrial precision manufacturing and measurement technology, and it has accumulated rich experience in market applications, which can accurately provide customers with the most suitable solutions.
Three main points of the purchase guide:
1. Analyze the inspection tools from the manufacturing process
Whether it is RD department or QC department, some auxiliary tools are often needed to assist in measuring the appearance dimensions of the product such as thickness, aperture. Traditional manual measuring tools such as vernier calipers, height gauges, dial indicators or 2.5D optical projectors can mostly cope with simple dimensions such as the length, depth, aperture, angle, and 2D profile of the product.
However it will encounter the following situations to use traditional manual measuring tools.
- Contact measuring tools such as calipers are prone to man-made measurement errors.
- The errors are caused by measurement techniques, excessive angles, etc.
- Unable to detect overall deformation trends and geometric tolerances, etc
- Large and complex workpieces cannot be effectively measured.
- Unable to measure related products with curved surfaces.
Although the three-dimensional measurement and detection is also a common 3D measurement solution on the market, the following technical problems are faced.
- Three-dimensional measurement results cannot be analyzed in time.
- When the workpiece has multiple apertures, multiple sizes, or complex shapes, it is difficult and time-consuming to measure.
- Repetitive problems such as high technical threshold, fixture erection, positioning level, and origin erection
- High dependence on personnel, requiring dedicated operations
2. The shape and size of the product determines the type of scanner you choose.
- If the size of your product is more than 1 meter and has complex curved surfaces such as automobile and motorcycle sheet metal, molds, die-casting and forging products, we recommend the series of handheld scanners.
- If the size of the product is less than 1 meter, you can choose photogrammetry or handheld scanners. The high-detail places of the product can be scanned by a photogrammetry scanner with an interchangeable lens.
- If the size of the product is within 10 cm, and it belongs to dolls, artworks, educational research, we recommend low-end desktop scanners.
- If the product needs long-term mass production operation or accuracy requirements, of course, scanning speed and accuracy will be the key considerations in evaluating the product level.
3. What is the evaluation budget before purchasing the scanner?
Your unit can analyze the requirements of monthly development or measurement to decide the implementation of outsourcing services or the introduction of equipment. Before your company purchases a scanner, you needs to estimate how much output value of the equipment will increase and how much labor cost can be reduced for the unit, and more detailed estimation of investment return rate and utilization rate.
Summary
As a product developer or quality control personnel, you begin to think about using 3D reverse scanners and 3D scanning to reduce work pressure, time and labor costs, and make product development smoother and more efficient. You can also directly save the measurement data in 3D digital method, and then you can use it when you need to copy or modify the design. If you want to mass-produce in the future, you only need to make a copy of the file in 3D printing.
The 3D laser scanner can sense the shape of the object, collect data, and determine the outer surface of the object. Whether in academic research or commercial use, there is no lack of support for this technology. It is also commonly used in many industries, including manufacturing, public utilities, construction, archaeology, law enforcement, entertainment. In addition, the high-quality data generated by the laser scanner is currently used in many professional fields such as geography, environment, and industry, and has become the right-hand man of various projects. - What can be done in 0.01 second? The big data generation is coming.
-
With the continuous rise of 3D technology, from the requirements of industrial manufacturing process to the life, 3D digital application is ubiquitous. Through 3D scanning, capture up to millions of 3D point cloud data in 0.01 second. The data can be designed, testes, and developed by software. 3D scanning technology has been applied in various fields, including automobile, aerospace, shipbuilding, medical treatment, game animation, architectural art, etc.

- What is a blue laser?
-
Common laser designators have red light, green light, blue light and blue-violet light, etc. The power is usually measured in milliwatt.
The latest 3D blue laser technology (Blue laser) refers to laser light with a wavelength between 360 and 480 nanometers (nm). Blue laser is mainly composed of gallium nitride, and it is a common semiconductor laser diode. This new component is used in many fields from high-density data storage to medical applications.
The wavelength of 3D red laser light is between 650nm and 660nm. According to the physical law, when the roughness of the surface is grater than the wavelength of light, , when the surface roughness R of an object is greater than the wavelength of light, diffuse reflection will occur. On the contrary, when it is less than the wavelength of light, mirror reflection will occur.
If the roughness is less than 450nm, red light and blue light will result in mirror reflection. If the roughness is greater than 450nm and less than 650nm, red light will result in mirror reflection, and blue light will result in diffuse reflection. If the roughness is greater than 650nm, red light and blue light will result in diffuse reflection under the same light intensity, and diffuse reflection is conducive to three-dimensional scanning.
- What types of 3D scanners are there?
-
Three-dimensional scanners are classified into two types: contact and non-contact. The latter can be divided into active scanning and passive scanning. These categories are divided into many different technical methods. The method of using visible light to achieve reconstruction is also known as a vision-based method. It is one of mainstream of machine vision research today.
Contact scanning:
The contact 3D scanner calculates the depth by actually touching the surface of the object. For example, the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) is a typical contact 3D scanner. This method is quite accurate, and it is often used in the manufacturing industry. However, because it must touch the object during the scanning process, the object may be damaged by the probe. So it is not suitable for high-value objects such as ancient cultural relics of reconstruction.
Non-contact scanning:
Active scanning means that additional energy is projected to an object, and it calculates three-dimensional information through the reflection of the energy. Common projected energies include general visible light, high energy beams, ultrasound and X-rays.
Time-of-Flight
The 3D laser scanner which uses the time-of-flight is an active scanner, and it uses laser light to detect targets. Lidar (lidar is an abbreviation of light detection and ranging, or called 3D laser scanner) is a laser rangefinder with time-of-flight as the main technology. It can be used to scan large buildings and rock formations. Lidar's laser beam can scan a considerable range.
Triangulation ranging
Triangulation ranging 3D laser scanner is also an active scanner that uses laser light to detect environmental conditions. Compared with the time-of-flight, the 3D laser scanner emits a laser to the object, and it uses a camera to find the laser spot on the object. With the different distance between the object and 3D laser scanner, the position of the laser spot in the camera screen is also different. The reason why this technique is called the triangulation ranging is that the laser spot, the camera, and the laser itself form a triangle.
Handheld Laser scanner
The handheld laser scanner constructs a 3D pattern through the above mentioned triangulation ranging, and through the handheld device, a laser spot or linear laser light is emitted to the object. Use two or more detectors (optical coupler or position sensing element) to measure the distance from the surface of the object to the handheld laser product, and they are usually with the help of a specific point of reference (usually viscous and reflective patch) which is used as positioning and calibration of the scanner in space.
The data obtained by these scanners will be imported into the computer and converted into a 3D model by software. Handheld laser scanners usually integrate data of passive scanning (visible light) such as the structure and color distribution of the object to construct a more complete 3D model of the object.
How to distinguish and choose laser products?
1. LiDAR laser scanning: above 10 meters. The scanning distance extends to overall building and space. The accuracy has been calculated from the error value of millimeters to centimeters.
2. Handheld laser scanning: within 5 meters. Accuracy is calculated from the error value of 0.02mm to 0.06mm.
Today handheld laser scanning has broken through higher-level technology. It is combined with infrared optical tracking systems to scan a large area in real time and obtain digital data without a point of reference.
Structured Lighting
Project a one-dimensional or two-dimensional image onto the object. According to the deformation of the image, judge the shape of the surface. It can scan at a very fast speed. Compared with a probe that measures one point at a time, this method can measure multiple points or large areas at one time, so it can be used for dynamic measurement.
